As I write this, CNN is playing on my TV in the background and political pundits are offering their projections and estimations for the 2016 election. I’m not sure who the winner will be but I don’t have to be sure about the winner in order to be sure that there will be millions of disappointed people as the winner is announced.
That’s the way elections work. With a two party system, every four years nearly half of America is going to be disappointed with the selection (Granted, this year the disappointment is being delivered with a heavy dose of anxiety – regardless of who wins).
So, as you scroll through your social media feeds today I’m sure you will see all kinds of posts detailing the doom of our nation. Theories of how the sky is falling and how it’s the end of America as we know it.
I can’t say for certain that it won’t be the end of America as we know it, but I do know that we aren’t called to operate in fear. In fact, there is a verse that applies here pretty well …
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Phillipians 4:6
So, today, regardless of the winning candidate – I am choosing to pray. Not because I’ve lost hope, but because that is where my hope resides.
Not in a president. Not in a policy. Not in a platform.
I don’t know who you voted for or how you’re feeling, but I want to encourage you to do the same. Whether your candidate won or lost, whether you’re angry or sad, the fact remains that this country needs your prayers.
Presidents will come and go, politics will shift, but the hope we have in Christ can withstand it all.
