This morning I made some coffee, sat down with a fresh cup, and stared out the window at the falling snow. At this point, the entire yard was completely covered in a blanket of fluffy white.
All except for one small patch underneath my wife’s Jeep. It was there that several birds were hopping about and pecking at the ground. It was their safe haven from the winter storm that was occurring around them.
My wife, Courtney, walked into the room and I pointed out the bird huddle occurring under her vehicle.
She smiled and mentioned that God does in fact provide for the birds of the field.

The more I thought about this verse and the more I watched the birds hopping around outside… I realized God was teaching me.
I struggle with worry often. I over-think and over-analyze most everything in my life.
What I noticed as I watched these birds, is they didn’t seem too worried about the mountains of snow towering around them. They were simply enjoying the shelter and food provided.
Their focus wasn’t on the problem; their focus was on the solution – a small patch of food and shelter.
It wasn’t a lot, but it seemed to be just enough.
To be honest, if I were a bird in this situation I’d probably be frozen to a birdbath somewhere complaining about my water being frozen and that a blanket of snow had covered my birdfeeder.
I wish I could say that I would be safely hopping around the shelter like the other birds, but in most cases I hang around the issue.
That sounds ridiculous, but when storms in our life occur we are bent towards focusing on the problem rather than the solution. Worrying about the problem feels right because it gratifies, satisfies, and justifies our worry.
However, as I realized once again this morning – God doesn’t call us to worry, he calls us to trust.
When storms occur He is to be our shelter, strength, and refuge (Psalm 46:1)
